The first song in this collection is Dylan in his classic new-Woody guise. His dominance of the Greenwich Village folk movement is foreshadowed by the angry and resolute song “Hard Times in New York Town.” Honest hobo laments “Man on the Street” and “He Was a Friend of Mine” are right out of the Guthrie school. Among other people, Paul Robeson made “No More Auction Block,” a traditional slave song of emancipation, famous. The Bootleg Series is a huge success on several levels. As a whole, it beautifully depicts Dylan’s various personas and stages, from neo-folklorist to psychedelic blues rocker to country crooner to singer-songwriter and more.
